Virupaksha (2023) online

Virupaksha is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language mystery horror film directed by Karthik Varma Dandu who co-wrote the film with Sukumar. The film was produced by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and Sukumar Writings. It features Sai Dharam Tej, Samyuktha Menon, Sunil, Rajeev Kanakala, Brahmaji, and Ravi Krishna in primary roles.

Virupaksha was released on 21 April 2023 and opened to generally positive reviews from critics and audience praising the direction, screenplay, writing, score, cinematography, Visuals Effects and cast performances (particularly Menon's). After accident it was an first movie for Sai Dharam and it became commercially successful by grossing more than 60 crore.

In 1979, in the village of Rudravanam, Venkata Chalapathy is seen performing black magic in his house. An angry mob bursts into the house and burn him and his wife, blaming them for the recent mysterious deaths of children in their village. Chalapathy's wife curses the entire village, saying that the village would be destroyed in the twelfth year from then. Their son, Bhairava, is later admitted to an orphanage by the villagers, who is seen swearing vengeance and chanting spells.

In 1991, a villager is attacked by a crow and starts walking into the forest while under a trance. Surya, who returns to his village after 12 years with his family to attend a festival. However, the village is under a lockdown after the villager dies in the temple, and there is a fear of a curse. The village priest imposes an 8 day lockdown where no one is to come and go from the village while simultaneously not performing any religious rituals. Surya's family who, although they belong to the village, they had not lived in the village for more than a decade, are asked to leave before sunset along with other visitors. Surya plans to leave; however, he returns when he has to deliver injections to Nandini, during an emergency. Nandini later gives him her pendant thanking him for his timely help. However, since the ritual is over, Surya has to stay in the village. That night, Sudha decides to break the lockdown rules and elope with her lover, Kumar, via train. However, Kumar is killed by an oncoming train while talking to Sudha. Sudha, who witnesses this, goes into a state of shock, walks into a beehive, and gets stung by bees to death. As the lockdown progresses, strange events start occurring, and more people start dying in a chain reaction. Surya starts investigating the curse and comes to know about Venkata Chalapathy and his wife. Meanwhile the village decides to sacrifice Nandini by also giving their blood to life the curse. Surya finds out that Bhairava, is still alive and is seeking revenge. Surya then says that in 8 hours he will find out a way to get rid of the spell and save Nandini so he leaves the village in search for a solutuon. Surya with the help of an Aghora, finds the cave where the spell has been cast and it is found that it was Bhairava who cast the spell and it is later revealed to be Kumar and that someone in the village was helping him with the spell.

By the time Surya returns, he realizes that the whole village has been possessed after giving their blood. The villagers, in their possessed state, start walking towards a burning tree. It is the same tree on which Chalapathy and his wife were tied to and burnt. He confronts Nandini and she reveals that her parents were innocent and that her father, a practitioner of Atharvana veda, used his knowledge to fight diseases and curses, which the villagers, in a frenzy, mistook for evil practices and killed him. She decides to let Surya go as he had nothing to do with the death of her parents. Surya does not leave and decides to fight Nandini to protect the village. Nandini is unable to attack Surya as he has her pendant, whose magical powers act as a shield against her own powers. Seeing no other way, Nandini tearfully asks Surya to kill her, to which he agrees and kills her, thus ending the plague of death.

A few days later, while performing the final rites of Nandini, Surya requests the villagers to let go of their taboo regarding evil practices. He looks at Nandini's pendant in his hand and his eyes start to glow as the screen goes black.
